Non-trade provisions in trade agreements and FDI

Preferential trade agreements (PTAs) increasingly feature a variety of provisions related to economic and social rights (ESR), environmental protection (EP), civil political (CPR). In this paper we estimate the effect degree legalization PTAs in these non-trade on flow bilateral greenfield FDI. We explore relation structural gravity setting find that all three types affect FDI negatively. This is driven by investments directed middle- low-income countries, particular for more directly economically relevant (ESR EP) provisions. These latter are also found have larger negative impact between origin-destination country-pairs which differ most their commitment issues with third parties.
